Check the condition and slack of the chain and adjust it. Lubricate it if necessary.
Drive chain service life depends on proper lubrication and adjustment. Poor maintenance can cause premature wear or damage to the drive chain and sprockets. The transmission chain must be checked and lubricated as part of the inspection prior to the first ride of the motorcycle. Under severe conditions of use, or when the motorcycle is ridden in areas with a lot of dirt, it will be necessary to maintain the motorcycle more frequently.
Inspection
- Turn the engine “OFF”, place the bike on its main stand and shift into neutral. Remove the hole cover (2).
- Drive chain slack (3) should be adjusted to allow vertical movement of approximately 20-30mm per hand. Rotate the wheel and check the slack of the drive chain as the wheel rotates. The drive chain slack should remain constant as the wheel rotates. If the drive chain is loose in one section and tight in another, some links are twisted and bent. Bents can be eliminated by lubricating them frequently.
- Rotate the chain to see the chain fixing plate (4) inside the hole. Make sure the open end of the chain lock plate (5) is installed in the opposite direction of chain rotation.
- Check the pinion tooth for wear or damage.
- If the drive chain or sprockets are excessively worn or damaged, they must be replaced. Never use a new chain with worn sprockets as this will result in rapid chain wear.
Adjustment
- Place the motorcycle on the main stand with the transmission in neutral and the ignition switch in the “OFF” position.
- Loosen the rear axle nut (1) and the lock nut (2). Loosen the drive chain lock nut (3).
- Turn both adjusting nuts (4) an equal number of turns until the correct number of turns and slack is obtained for the timing chain. Turn the adjusting nut clockwise to decrease chain slack and counterclockwise to increase chain slack.
- Align the chain adjustment index mark (5) with the corresponding graduation (6) on both sides of the swing arm in the same manner.
- Tighten the rear axle nut and washer nut. Check the drive chain slack again.
Note:
As the drive chain is loosened, the chain adapter moves to the right. If the drive chain slack is excessive when the rear axle is moved to extreme tightness or limit, the drive chain is worn and should be replaced.
Lubrication
- Shut off the engine and place the motorcycle on its main stand and put the transmission in neutral.
- Lubricate the drive chain by applying a liberal amount of SAE – 90 oil or chain lubricant.
Regular adjustment and lubrication according to the maintenance schedule will ensure high performance and long life.
